More than 10000 years before Christ, the western edge of melting glacier was located near today's Sigulda town. The most powerful river of time ran along the deep glacier canyon, it was 8 times the maximum depth of today's Gauja.This river formed more than 100 meters high waterfall cascades, which in its foothills eroded frozen ground surface up to 80 meters deep in Devonian sea-generated sandstone. Today's Niagara water fall thunder is like child's whisper compared to that time Gauja waterfalls noise. Today the valley is quiet and peaceful, only a small brook left from glacial river tries to recover its former strength every spring. A legend tells that this place was especially sweet for a 17th century lived, extremely wealthy Baron. Since he had no descendants, and he did not want to share his wealth with others, he hid it in a certain place. However, he wanted that somebody will evaluate his great wealth someday and, therefore, left a mysterious reference on the scratch of clay pitcher, which was found during the construction of secret Soviet military base, near Līgatne ferry in 1985. The only words legible from old message was "... durch Wasser gehen ...". On March 27./ 28., 2010. Adventure race "Baron's Quest" calls to feel the breath of ancient times in the expedition in Latvia canyon country - Līgatne. Team of 3 people will make distance of 30 km by bike, 24 km on foot and 26 km by boat in Elite class and 10 km on foot and 10 km by boat in Sport class. If there is a place to come for the Adventure Race in Latvia, - its here in Ligatne. This is the only place in the World, where going to cellar for a potatoes may include use of serious climbing and even diving equipment. The cellars itself are carved in 3 hundred million years old Devonian sandstone. There are no other place in Latvia, where you can get in danger of snow avalanche. We enjoyed some on the route planing expedition 2 days ago. There are numbers of wild animals in the forest, a special task will be to take a photo with one of them in the race, it will be so easy to do.
